Forbes Magazine: America's Premier
Wealth and Money Periodical

Forbes magazine is a bi-weekly American business magazine that promotes entrepreneurial capitalism by telling the stories of the people behind the world’s most successful businesses, often compiling this data in list form. Founded in 1917 by B.C. Forbes, it is the oldest business magazine in America. With the help of partner Walter Drey, the general manager of the Magazine of Wall Street, B.C. Forbes started the magazine and called it Forbes: Devoted to Doers and Doings, which was later shortened to Forbes. Although the detailed description was removed from the name, the focus of the magazine remained the same: Interpreting business and financial data by relating the facts and figures to the people behind them and the people affected by them. Today, the magazine continues in that tradition and is best known for its exclusive and definitive lists, such as the Forbes 400, representing the richest people in America. This human, relative approach to business journalism has caused Forbes to maintain its status as one of the top business and finance periodicals in America.

Throughout the history of the magazine, Forbes has been family-owned and operated. Founder B.C. Forbes was the first editor-in-chief and remained so until his death in 1954. Since then his two eldest sons, Bruce Charles Forbes (1916–1964) and Malcolm Stevenson “Steve” Forbes (1917–1990), and now his grandson, Malcolm Stevenson “Steve” Forbes, Jr. serves as the editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine and President and Chief Executive of the Forbes publishing and media company.

The success of Forbes magazine has caused the publishing company to grow and expand, introducing new publications and media to the Forbes organization. The company publishes ten foreign versions of the magazine, including Forbs Asia and Forbes India, as well as Forbes Life, a lifestyle supplement magazine. Forbes also formerly published American Heritage and Invention & Technology magazines, but they have since been sold. However, the Forbes footprint is not only in print media. In broadcast media, Forbes On Fox and Forbes On Radio offer weekly investment advice. However, the most notable new media publication by Forbes is the Forbes.com website.

Forbes.com also publishes subscription investment newsletters, and an online guide to web sites, Best Of The Web.

The Forbes.com website is part of Forbes’ Digital, a division of Forbes Media LLC. Forbes’ Digital web properties include Realclearmarkets.com, Realclearsports.com, and Realclearpolitics.com. These sites enjoy a combined 27 million unique visitors each month. Like the magazine, Forbes.com publishes many lists, focusing on billionaires and their lavish lifestyles, particularly their expensive homes, which contributes heavily to the popularity of the site. Forbes.com publishes more than 3,500 articles and original video every day, providing the most relevant and useful information to business consumers who need to stay in the know and living up to its slogan, "Information for the World's Business Leaders".

Forbes magazine is best known for publishing lists of the most successful business people and organizations each year, published both in print and online. Making one of exclusive Forbes’ lists is a cultural and economic achievement for a business person, and such an achievement proves to inspire other business people who read the magazine. The data compiled into the lists, however, does not merely feed the vanity of those who appear on them. The data themselves are useful to those who follow industry and economic trends to gauge what’s happening in the marketplace and why.

Forbes’ lists include the following:
